Like all good stories, this one begins long ago and far away. 151 years ago in Chiaravalle Italy, to be precise. That’s the year Maria Montessori was born.
Maria grew up to re-shape the way the world educates its children. She envisioned an education for the whole child; physical, emotional, social and cognitive. Now, 69 years since she died, Maria’s work continues to expand and evolve, converting educators all over the world.
Montessori Schools today look, sound, and feel much different than a traditional classroom. If you took a peek inside one of our schools you’d see a scene much like this one described in Maria’s book,“The Montessori Method”:
“There are (many) little beings- from three to seven years old, each one intent on his (or her) own work; one is going through one of the exercises for the senses, one is doing an arithmetical exercise, one is handling the letters, one is drawing….Some are seated at the tables, some on rugs at the floor.”
Montessori classrooms aren’t separated into grades either, they are grouped into developmental stages categorized by Dr. Montessori herself. An article in Forbes explains:
“Because kids learn at different paces, grouping by age can prevent students who learn at a slower but developmentally appropriate pace from being labeled as behind grade level.”
So does it work? Does letting a child dictate the direction of their own education really end well?
(We’re so glad you asked)…
Recent research has been conducted comparing 256 Montessori and non-Montessori students, and the findings are incredible….. They found that Montessori children have comparatively higher levels of self-regulation, working memory, planning, and academic success. You can read more about the study here.
