What Does A Montessori Classroom Look Like?

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside Providence Montessori Academy? You probably know the classrooms, desks, and materials are different from what you’d find in a traditional school. Today we’re going to give you a glimpse into the unique world of a Montessori classroom.

First of all, our classrooms are separated into different groups: Infant, Nido, Toddler, Early Childhood, and Elementary. In each classroom, our teachers create customized environments that foster creativity. You won’t see desks aligned in rows and facing a whiteboard, but you will find our students working on their own, or in small groups, sitting at tables or maybe on the floor. (Wherever they’re comfortable.)

According to the American Montessori Society, “Classrooms also include low sinks accessible to the children, child-sized furniture, cozy spaces for quiet reading, reachable shelves with work available for free choice, and child-sized kitchen utensils so the students can eat, prepare, and clean up their own snacks. Teachers gently guide students to help maintain the organization and cleanliness of this environment to keep it orderly and attractive, and to help children understand how to care for materials and clean up after themselves.”

Perhaps the most important aspect of a Montessori classroom is what is being taught inside. The Early Childhood classroom offers your child more than math and language. We teach to the whole child, incorporating concepts like courtesy and respect alongside art and music.
